The center is a research organization addressing local and regional features in construction with an experimental architectural approach. Experimental architecture is reflective and deeply rooted in hand-on practices. Its revival reveals the deficiency in Chinese architecture: absence of cultural reflection and lack of workmanship. The reflective focus enables researchers to have constructive dialogues with the latest development in the humanities such as in the fields of philosophy, linguistics, anthropology, art criticism and other artistic activities. The workmanship focus encourages research work to tap into new possibilities of technology concealed by conventional practices while exploring traditional Chinese architectonic styles.
The Center views teaching, research and creativity as an organic totality. It strives to be venue for experimental architects from home and abroad to exchange and stimulate ideas and share their expertise. Activities in the Center will be around theoretical exploration, research projects, symposiums, publications, professional exhibits and teaching of graduate students.
